In the early hours of December 12, 2023, my wife and I received the chilling call that no parent should ever endure — our child had been shot. As we rushed to the hospital, our minds raced with fear and shock, culminating in a surreal scene at the ER with a helicopter poised for the worst-case scenario. Though our child's wound was non-life-threatening, the incident unfolded as part of an apparent murder-suicide plot by her boyfriend, leaving us grappling with the harsh reality that gun violence had touched our lives. The young man by his own admission in an audio recording said he had been in a mental health facility 5 different times. He should never have been able to purchase a gun.
I stand not just as a parent who has faced the terror of a child in the line of fire but as a concerned member of our community.
It's time for common-sense gun reform.
